The Anderson-Lowe Geography Bee is a district-wide geography quiz competition for students in grades 1 through 4. The DeKalb Elementary School of the Arts at Hooper Alexander Elementary School hosts it each year in November or December. The geography bee is for 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Team practices have historically been held twice a week for 45 minutes at a time for 5 weeks.PTA covers the entry fee. There is no cost to students to participate. The teacher sponsor administers a written test one morning to all students interested in trying out. 10 students are selected from those tested to be on the team.
We are planning to hold a grade level spelling bee and a school wide spelling bee competition.
Science Olympiad is a program that extends and enhances our school’s science curriculum. Students are exposed to activities related to science processes and thinking skills, science concepts and knowledge, and science application and technology.
The Vanderlyn team meets from late January through April one day per week (to be chosen by teacher representative) after school with the teacher sponsor and parent coaches until 3:45 p.m. A letter goes out in early January to all third grade students inviting them to participate. Participation is on a first come, first served basis. Only 2 teams of 15 can enter the Olympiad from each school. The DeKalb County Competition includes grades 3-5.
After the teams and events are selected, parents coach and prepare the students for the Olympiad. Students may purchase a few supplies to build their science projects, but the cost is minimal.
This is a new program we are initiating this year. We hope to include students at all grade levels. Students will have a “reading list” and a certain period of time to complete their books. Then we will host a “local battle of the books” with other feeder schools asking questions to students about the books they read. There is no cost to the students to participate. Any student may participate. More details will follow.
4-C stands for Children Concentrating on Caring for the Community. Participation is open to any third grade student. You must attend 2 meetings per month. Meetings are from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. The emphasis of the club is to encourage students to pursue their own interests, develop friendships, and grow self-confidence, independence and respect for themselves and others. Club members will serve as an example for the entire student body.
There is no cost to students to participate.
The track club is intended not just for good runners, but any child that wants to gain friendship, leadership, and commitment skills. The cost last year was $30/student to cover a track t-shirt and pedometer for each participant. Students participated in four 5K races. The track club is open to all third grade students.
Dance Troupe is a program offering students an opportunity to explore multiple styles of dance. Not only do students enhance their dance and performance skills but they also gain self-confidence and poise. The program works to help improve flexibility, balance, physical strength, mobility and coordination.
Whitney Wallenstein leads the Dance Troupe. Ms. Wallenstein is currently the full-time dance teacher at Vanderlyn Elementary School. For more information, please contact Whitney Wallenstein at (404) 993-4122 or eimdance@gmail.com. You may read more on Ms. Wallenstein's website, www.eimdance.com.
Vanderlyn Singers is a musical public relations arm of Vanderlyn Elementary. The Vanderlyn Singers perform at numerous community functions such as “Light up Dunwoody”, “Publix Music Festival”, and at local malls. Most of these performances are held during the holiday season. Additionally, the Vanderlyn singers perform in the annual DeKalb Elementary Choral Festival.
In the past, the Vanderlyn Singers have been invited to sing at the Governor’s Mansion, Agnus Scott College, the Georgia State Capital, The Southern Company, downtown hotels, and the Ravinia, among others.
Most importantly, the Vanderlyn Singers perform in the annual holiday programs at our school. The time commitment required is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings 7:00-7:30 a.m. The selection process is done as a personal audition through Mr. Lay. Second and third grade students are considered for the program.
The chess club is an after school activity for students to learn more about the game of chess. Download the sign up form.
The purpose of Family Math Night is to encourage families to become excited about math. After playing some fun games at our event, we hope your family will view math in a new and exciting way.

The International Committee hosts an annual Potluck Evening, which is open to all Vanderlyn families and takes place in the school cafeteria. The Vanderlyn students decorate the cafeteria in an international theme. Guests are encouraged to wear the costume of their country/culture. Families bring their favorite dish from their home country or culture. This is a wonderful opportunity to taste traditional foods from all over the world.
The evening includes live international performances. The grand finale involves inviting all the children in costume on stage to sing. Children at the event will enjoy international activities, crafts and games. They can also try traditional dress up from many different places of the world.
This is an event where cultures of the world can come together in pride and with mutual respect to showcase their great diversity.
This is a new event we are planning for the upcoming school year. This is expected to be a school-wide event held in April. Students will have an opportunity with their teachers to showcase their talents. Parents and guests will be invited for an evening at the school to view the work(s) of their student(s).
Usually held on October 31st, this outdoor event includes all students with fun activities and games.
The fall social is a fun, outdoor event for all students and their families to come together in a night of ice cream, dancing, and camaraderie.
We are currently organizing the program for the upcoming year. This is a time when students may invite family and special friends to come and visit their school and specifically their class. More details will follow.
This is a day of school spirit. Each grade is assigned a color and competes in fun games outside. The event is usually held in late spring toward the end of the school year.
